The News Page: Coach's opening remarks for 2006!

Dear Team and Parents,

Welcome to another fun and exciting year of Lower Merion Crew. This coming year promises to be even more exciting than last spring, with greater possibilities of winning and developing of life long friends. Prior to coming into this academic year many of our athletes participated in a summer program of some sort to help with their technical skills and with their fitness. Steve Krajewski found much success rowing out of Fairmount Boathouse. Steve, a member of the Men's Lightweight 4+ last year, rowed at the US National Championships and won two silver medals. Congratulations to Steve for his big success this summer. He will use that experience to help with a successful season this year as well.

We started this year with a fall season once again out of Bachelors Barge Club. The fall was much more laid back this year and despite not as much intensity still found success with the women's 4+ winning the Braxton Regatta and the both the men's 8+ and women's 8+ coming home with gold at the new regatta held on the lower Schuylkill River. During the season, I asked the athletes what they wanted their goal to be for the season, they replied "To have all boats qualify to go to Nationals."

With this goal in mind, we entered the winter season with higher expectations than the last. We set our goal much higher this year and have a solid group of athletes training. All of these athletes have already reached personal bests on the erg and are looking to go even faster. This work is setting the tone for the upcoming spring season.

With each year that I have coached this team, we have raised the bar of expectations and the athletes each year always surpass these goals. This year looks to be no different. I am excited about this upoming season and hope that the excitement continues through till the end of May.

The spring will bring more expectations and more intensity as we hit the water. I look forward to welcoming the new freshmen rowers on the team after exams. It looks like the freshmen will be a great addition to the team and we will expect just as much from them as we expect from our varsity.

Finally, I would like to welcome back most of our coaching staff from last year. The consistency in quality coaching is truly been what has helped us in the last few years. Zach Ben-Dov is back as the Varsity Women's Coach, Mike Wood will be returning as the Freshmen Men's Coach. Kate Freeland will be returning as well to help with the Freshmen Women and Varsity Women's squad.

I look forward to meeting everyone at the Crew Social again this year and having a good time.

See you all then, Brian Conley Head Crew Coach
